After a number of trees were cut across south Mumbai for the ongoing work on Mumbai Metro rail, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is talking of transplantation. However, claiming that it does not have any space for transplantation, it has now approached the Indian Railways to provide land for the same.

On Wednesday, the first leg of transplantation took place at Mumbai Central inside the Agripada railway colony that is close to the railway station. In all 200 trees will be transplanted across the various railway colonies in Mumbai, wherever there is empty land available.

"We cannot transplant all the trees at Aarey. It is better that transplantation of trees is done locally. We requested the Railways to provide their land for this," said Ashwini Bhide, MMRCL.

These are the trees that had to be uprooted along the alignment of the Mumbai Metro's network in south Mumbai areas upto Mahalaxmi. The railway officials claim that this transplantation of trees uprooted from city centres will help them retain the green cover of the city.
