Safety features for Differently-Abled People - Lucknow Metro

Two prominent NGOs working for social cause and betterment of humans visited Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) depot on March 9, 2017 to understand its design, work model and safety features, especially those features which have been designed for differently-abled people.

On Thursday, Mridu Goel, Chairman of Handicare foundation along with Siddharth Dubey (Special Course Coordinator, Chetna foundation) visited the depot at Transport Nagar in Lucknow. The group was given warm welcome by Director, Rolling Stock, LMRC Mahendra Kumar. A small program was also organised in the training centre at depot to welcome them.

Officials attending the group said, "Metro is for all. Keeping this as a priority, Lucknow Metro has been designed and constructed in such a manner that a person with special needs can easily travel in Lucknow metro without anybody else's support." LMRC said that there are enough lifts, escalator which will aid commuters with special needs. Mridu Goel also gave a presentation in which she mentioned the problems that differently able have to face while using any advice on what to do and what no to do while dealing with differently-abled.

In Lucknow Metro, facilities for disabled people have been divided into three major — one is for mobility-impaired passenger which provides for special space for the wheelchair, long stop button gap etc; second feature is for visually impaired passengers which are facilitated through announcement through microphones installed and the third feature is for hearing impaired passenger for whom visual display screens are installed inside the train.

Besides Lucknow Metro has also tied up with UP's Women Power Line 1090 to provide enough power angels on stations and trains to instil sense of safety and confidence among women passengers while traveling inside metro premises. Officials said that the teams would be present on most stations to educate women about their safety arrangements inside metro train and also how they can seek help in times of emergency.
